Fascinating Succulents

Succulents are becoming some of my favorite plants. I have a lot of shade in my garden so it is challenging for me to use them in my garden beds, but I’m fascinated by the textures and shapes and how they can be composed into artful displays. Linda Beutler, curator of the Rogerson Clematis Collection and former (?) floral designer used them to excellent effect on the bodice of a chicken wire dress we created for the Farwest Show. Linda affectionately called the dress “Sunny Girl.” She has intentions of making her appear again at the Yard, Garden & Patio Show (February 8-10, Oregon Convention Center) in the Hardy Plant display, most likely with a new dress design.

Danger Garden blogger Loree Bohl has an enduring interest in succulents. She posted photos of “Sunny Girl” (and the other two chicken wire dresses we created) and other succulents she found at the Farwest Show. Check out her blog here.

Debra Lee Baldwin has had success with succulents as an author, photographer and lecturer. If you are a fan of succulents, you might want to stay in touch with Debra via her newsletter, blog or website. In her most recent newsletter, she included a video of Pete the Border Collie checking out the succulent inventory in a specialty nursery. Because I’m enamored with dogs and plants, I wanted to share it with you. While you watch Pete, you’ll also see some of the many succulent shapes and colors.

Enjoy the eye candy!
